Welcome to the second installment of the Party Favorz Classix Edition! I took particular pride in making this mix, not only because of the outstanding music in 1999 but because it was the year I got back into the whole clubbing scene and spinning. It was the year I left a long-term relationship that was becoming abusive and moved back home with my parents. Okay, maybe that part wasn’t all that great, but thank God for good ole mom and dad. 1999 was the year that DJs became the “rock stars” in their own right. In an effort to reach out to a wider audience, Clive Davis thankfully had the good business sense to start having his divas remixed. It certainly worked for Deborah Cox the year before, whose Hex Hector mix of “Nobody’s Supposed To Be Here” was still being requested 10 months later. It was also the year that Club 69 (aka Peter Rauhofer), Thunderpuss 2000 (aka Chris Cox & Barry Harris), Hex Hector and others were battling it out to see who could beat the other in their over the top productions. I think that was settled by the end of the year when Hex put out his now classic remix of JLo’s “Waiting For Tonight”, which set the standard in production techniques for years to come.
1999 was also the year of the “Latin Explosion”. We saw Jennifer Lopez, Enrique Iglesias, Ricky Martin and Marc Anthony shoot to the top of the charts with subsequent stellar remixes supporting their hits. Even Shakira, who was little known outside of Latin circles and didn’t crossover until two years later, had a critically acclaimed album with “Donde Esta Los Ladrones” and a fabulous song “Ojos Asi” which was remixed for the floor and packed ’em in every time. We also witnessed the birth of Britney and Christina, while the boy bands (Backstreet Boys and N’SYNC) duked it out. I could go on and on about this time in my life; Instead, I’ll just let the music speak for itself.
A couple of programming notes: This is a FOUR mix set. I don’t usually do something on such a grand scale, but this was a memorable moment in my life; so I found it difficult to put on the brakes. It was also a bitch and a half to mix up. The beat matching technology was just coming online at the time and was prohibitively expensive. More often than not, the beats were out of sync, so I would have to go back and recreate them, with one exception; At the time Club 69 must have been using the latest and greatest, as every single one of Peter’s productions mixed flawlessly. The first three mixes were your big room sounds of the moment; just perfect for all the circuit boys. The fourth mix is more house than anything with two trance classics stapled onto the end. The majority of these songs were played early in the evening when you were just heating up the floor. I hope everyone enjoys this as much as I did to recreate another year in the life. Enjoy!
