BPM Edition 2009 Volume 1 | Take 4

Moving along to the 4th installment of the BPM Edition 2009 v1, you’ll notice that the mix picks up where the 3rd one left off.  It starts off with some deep and dark progressive tunes before we jump back into the electro.  You might also want to take note of two remakes in this mix.

First up is “Send Me An Angel” by Lovematic feat. Sharon May Linn.  This is a remake of the 80’s classic by Real Life.  There are a variety of mixes that accompany this set and one even mimics the original while updating the synth riff for today’s floors.  While it’s not bad, I had a hard time swallowing it given the female voice as opposed to the original male vocals.  It’s hard to listen to a remake of such a massive classic as this without cringing.

Digging into the mixes I finally settled on the Fratty & Burra Club Mix which retains the original melody but uses it in ways never considered before.  For that, I applaud their originality and slapped on four stars to show my approval.  Then we have a remake of “Your Loving Arms” by Jose Amnesia vs. Karen Overton.

Of course the original was done by Billie Ray Martin in the mid-nineties.  This song has deep meaning to me and once again I was skeptical.  After listening to it, I was completely immersed in the song with its trance-like synths swirling around my head.  While nothing will ever match the magic of the original, this sure comes close.

As for Billie Ray, I’ve got a new mix of the very same song that I’ll probably drop in on next week’s “Winter Edition“.  I understand she’s working on some new material scheduled for release later this year.  I also have another 90’s classic remake slated for the final volume and will go into detail about that on Friday.

I also wanted to mention the Ting Tings latest offering.  “Fruit Machine” must be like their gazillionth single from their “We Started Nothing” debut.  Jam-packed with all sorts of electro-pop goodness, each song has been remixed to great effect by some of today’s hottest producers.  I don’t just love the remixes, but the album as well.

Before all is said and done, we may end up with another batch of mixes for “We Walk“.  Currently, they are scheduled to write and record a new album in Paris and Berlin.  If they can keep this up, they deserve every bit of success that has come their way.  Outstanding!

You may also be scratching your head and wondering “what is that bleached bottled blond thinking?”  Lily Allen’s “Fear” was already on take one.  Glad you asked.  I absolutely adore this song.  Wideboys and Stonebridge did a fabulous job of re-creating what was a rather ho-hum pop song and transforming it into something meaningful.  Th lyrics alone are worth the price of admission but coupled with these awesome dancefloor interpretations, bring the song to life.  While I don’t expect this song to become some worldwide dance hit, every once in a while there’s a song that just demands attention, and this is one such moment.

“I want to be rich and I want lots of money
I don’t care about clever I don’t care about funny
I want loads of clothes and fuckloads of diamonds
I heard people die while they are trying to find them

I’ll take my clothes off and it will be shameless
‘Cuz everyone knows that’s how you get famous
I’ll look at the sun and I’ll look in the mirror
I’m on the right track yeah I’m on to a winner

I don’t know what’s right and what’s real anymore
I don’t know how I’m meant to feel anymore
When do you think it will all become clear?
‘Cuz I’m being taken over by The Fear

Life’s about film stars and less about mothers
It’s all about fast cars cussing each other
But it doesn’t matter cause I’m packing plastic
and that’s what makes my life so fucking fantastic

And I am a weapon of massive consumption
and its not my fault it’s how I’m programmed to function
I’ll look at the sun and I’ll look in the mirror
I’m on the right track yeah we’re on to a winner

I don’t know what’s right and what’s real anymore
I don’t know how I’m meant to feel anymore
When do you think it will all become clear?
‘Cuz I’m being taken over by The Fear

Forget about guns and forget ammunition
Cause I’m killing them all on my own little mission
Now I’m not a saint but I’m not a sinner
Now everything’s cool as long as I’m getting thinner

I don’t know what’s right and what’s real anymore
I don’t know how I’m meant to feel anymore
When do you think it will all become clear?
‘Cause I’m being taken over by fear”

I’ll be back on Friday with the final installment.  Until then, stay warm and as always. ENJOY!
