Welcome to the 2022 edition of Gay Anthems For A New Generation! We’ve delved deep into the world of gay anthems, looking at what makes a song truly special to the LGBTQ+ community. This series reaches across generations, from Gen X to Gen Z, to celebrate the songs that have inspired, empowered, and united us.
What Makes a Song a Gay Anthem?
Not every song embraced by our community was originally written as a gay anthem. Yet for one reason or another, certain songs take on a life of their own and become part of our collective experience.
There are the powerhouse divas whose soaring vocals seem tailor-made for the dancefloor. There are heartfelt ballads about love, heartbreak, survival, and perseverance. Then come the carefree songs that encourage us to cast our worries aside and simply live in the moment.
And let’s not forget the anthems that build our hard-won self-esteem and celebrate our sexuality. We embrace songs about acceptance, resilience, independence, and refusing to apologize for who we are. We gravitate toward torch songs that speak to the world-weary while still believing that, somehow, love can conquer all.
Sometimes a Song Just Makes Us Happy
Not every gay anthem needs a profound message. Some songs earn their place simply because they bring us joy.
We also recognize the contributions of LGBTQ+ artists whose music transcends labels and connects with listeners of every background and orientation. Over time, those songs become woven into Pride celebrations, clubs, friendships, relationships, and memories that stay with us for years.
Gay Anthems Across Generations
As I put together this three-volume series, I made sure to include timeless classics that have resonated across multiple generations.
At the same time, I’ve included newer favorites from roughly the past decade, creating a mix that connects the familiar with the unexpected. That’s really the point of Gay Anthems For A New Generation: honoring the songs that shaped us while making room for the records defining LGBTQ+ culture today.
Celebrating Pride While Recognizing What’s at Stake
While we celebrate how far we’ve come toward equality, it’s impossible to ignore that the work is far from finished. There are challenges ahead that threaten some of the progress we’ve fought so hard to achieve over the past two decades.
Personally, that weighs heavily on my mind as Rick and I consider what the future may hold. Although my physical limitations restrict how much I can directly participate, I remain committed to documenting what is happening around us.
I’ll go deeper into those concerns in the final volume of Gay Anthems For A New Generation. For now, though, we’re putting the Debbie Downer vibes aside and focusing on the celebration.
