Welcome to the grand finale of the Pride Dance Classics series. With Volume 5, we wrap up our celebration of the iconic gay anthems that have soundtracked LGBTQ+ nightlife, Pride celebrations, and countless moments on the dancefloor.
Putting together and mixing this five-volume series has been both rewarding and surprisingly challenging. With so many essential tracks to choose from, deciding what made the final cut was easily the hardest part.
From Pride Dance Classics to a New Generation
If there’s a favorite you think we overlooked, chances are it will turn up in the upcoming Ultimate Gay Anthems For A New Generation series.
That collection is scheduled for release next week and will feature newer tracks alongside fresh remixes of many beloved gay anthems. In many ways, it picks up where these Pride Dance Classics leave off, showing how the soundtrack of LGBTQ+ nightlife continued to evolve.
Gay Anthems From the 90s Through the Millennium
This final volume focuses largely on the 90s through the first 15 years of the new millennium, an extraordinary period for dance music and gay club culture. It also reaches back into the 80s for several essential tracks that helped lay the groundwork for what followed.
Some classics appear in updated form, allowing them to sit comfortably alongside later productions while preserving the spirit that made the originals so memorable.
The DJs Who Transformed Songs Into Gay Anthems
Just as important as the artists are the DJs and remixers who transformed countless pop, R&B, and dance records into the massive club anthems we remember today.
Throughout this five-volume series, we’ve featured many of the influential names honored in our Legacy series, recognizing both living legends and those we’ve lost.
That includes Hex Hector, Junior Vasquez, Ralphi Rosario, Tony Moran, Freemasons, Almighty, 7th Heaven, DJ Barry Harris, Thunderpuss, Victor Calderone, Toy Armada & DJ Grind, Wayne G, and Jonathan Peters.
These DJs and production teams are at the heart of so many Pride Dance Classics. Their ability to take an existing song and completely reinvent it for the dancefloor gave us some of the greatest gay anthems of all time.
A Celebration of LGBTQ+ Dance Music History
As extensive as this series has become, no five-volume collection could possibly recognize every artist, DJ, producer, vocalist, or ally who contributed to this remarkable period in dance music history.
Their collective work created a soundtrack for generations of LGBTQ+ people—a soundtrack for Pride, nightlife, friendship, heartbreak, celebration, liberation, and everything in between. If someone deserving was unintentionally left out, their contribution is no less appreciated.
For now, that brings our Pride Dance Classics series to a close.
