Kristine W: New & Number Ones Review

Kristine W: New & Number Ones Album CoverIf you’re a fan of dance music, you don’t want to miss Kristine W’s latest album, “New & Number Ones.” From the moment I woke up and saw it had dropped, I was excited to check it out. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint. Many of us thought it would be a greatest hits album with a few new songs, but it’s so much more than that.

Kristine W dips into her debut album “Land of the Living,” considered one of the all-time greatest dance albums, and plucks four of the biggest dance floor smashes ever to hit the gay clubs, along with another hit from her second album “Stronger.”

These songs have all been updated and reworked to create an entirely new album. Dance classics like “Land of the Living,” “One More Try,” and “Feel What You Want” have been re-imagined as modern floor-stompers.

But the album doesn’t just rely on re-works. Kristine also introduces original songs that are destined to become future number ones. “Love Come Home” is a massive electro stomper, while “Everything I Got” is already a club favorite and quickly rising up the dance charts. And then there’s “Busted,” an unlikely future hit with lyrics that veer off the normal Kristine path.

The remakes on the album are just as impressive. Kristine takes on Chaka Khan‘s “Through the Fire” and adds a lot of flare to the original version, while still keeping that good ole house feeling intact.

And perhaps the most mind-blowing remake is “Sometimes Like Butterflies,” a rare Donna Summer b-side and tribute to the late queen of disco. As a gay kid who mowed lawns just to pay for his records (many of them Donna Summer), I was really moved that Kristine paid tribute to our fallen angel with class and beauty.

Overall, “New & Number Ones” is a welcome addition to Kristine’s ever-expanding catalog. With not a bad song in the bunch, it’s destined to become a classic in and of itself. Kristine consistently brings it, but this time she has truly outdone herself. Don’t miss out on this A+ album.
