Dolly Parton is probably one of the least likely artists you’d expect to have her music remixed for the dancefloor. But you know us gays and our divas. Where there’s a will, there’s a way—and we always find a way.
As such, this Diva Dance Tribute reaches into virtually every corner of dance music to reinterpret Dolly’s remarkable catalog. We’ve got House Music, Eurodance, Country Dance, Circuit, Disco, Future House and even Dubstep. The sheer variety speaks volumes about the affinity so many different people in our community have for Ms. Parton. And rightfully so.
Finding Dolly on the Dancefloor
Party Favorz spent the better part of a week pouring through everything the internet had to offer while digging deep into our own extensive collection of Dolly Parton remixes. There were plenty of surprises along the way.
There were also more versions of “Jolene” and “Peace Train” than we knew what to do with. Narrowing those down to just a couple of versions worthy of representing this tribute was surprisingly difficult. That’s largely because you can hear the love and devotion that went into many of these unofficial remixes.
These weren’t people randomly grabbing a famous vocal and throwing a beat underneath it. They were fans paying tribute to a woman who never expected anything from us in return.
Ultimately, we think we’ve done about as well as anyone could in pulling together the different sides of Dolly for the dancefloor.
We even treated classics like “Baby I’m Burnin'” with tender care. The original already had disco running through its veins, but recordings from that era don’t always have the weight and punch we’ve come to expect from modern dance music. We carefully remastered it to today’s standards while preserving everything that made the original work in the first place. The goal wasn’t to reinvent Dolly. It was to give the song the sound it always deserved.
What surprised me most was how easily this entire mix fell into place. Considering the number of genres represented here, it shouldn’t work nearly as well as it does. Sure, there are a few necessary crossfades, but for the most part, these wildly different interpretations mix together beautifully.
Maybe that shouldn’t be surprising. Dolly is the common thread holding everything together.
More Than a Country Music Legend
Dolly Parton wasn’t just a country music legend and Grammy winner. She was a philanthropist who gave an extraordinary amount of herself and her fortune to causes she genuinely believed in. Few public figures have ever matched the breadth of her generosity—or even attempted to.
She grew up with virtually nothing and became one of America’s most celebrated entertainers, yet she never seemed to forget where she came from. More importantly, she never forgot about people who weren’t fortunate enough to follow the same path.
Dolly spent her life giving back to her community and to humanity at large. Whether through literacy programs, education, disaster relief, medical research or countless other causes, her generosity wasn’t something she merely talked about. She put her own money, time and reputation behind the things she believed in.
There was something remarkable about the way Dolly embraced the “others” among us—the people society too often ignores, judges or casts aside—with seemingly endless compassion.
For the LGBTQ community, that mattered.
Dolly Parton Was Always in Our Corner
Dolly was one of the most steadfast celebrity supporters of gay people and, later, transgender people that our community could have asked for. She stood by us even when doing so wasn’t necessarily the easiest position for someone working in country music and coming from her deeply religious Southern background.
Yet somehow, Dolly was the one person her critics had difficulty attacking.
That’s because she never came across as calculating or performative. She wasn’t trying to score political points or sell us something. Everything she did appeared to come from her heart, and we never had reason to question her loyalty because she was remarkably genuine and sincere about the causes and people she embraced.
She didn’t lecture people about compassion. She practiced it.
That’s an important distinction.
Dolly seemed to understand something that has become increasingly rare: you don’t have to understand every aspect of someone else’s life to recognize their humanity. You don’t have to share their experiences to believe they deserve dignity, kindness and respect.
For generations of gay people who grew up being told there was something wrong with us, having someone like Dolly Parton say, in essence, I see you, I love you, and you’re welcome here carried more weight than she probably ever realized.
Our Turn to Give Something Back
That’s ultimately what this Diva Dance Tribute is about.
It’s easy to call something a tribute, string together a collection of hits and move on to the next project. This one feels different. There’s a genuine emotional connection behind many of these remixes, just as there’s one behind this mix.
Dolly never asked the LGBTQ community for anything. She simply gave us her support.
So this is our small way of returning some of that love.
She was one of a kind, embodying an American spirit rooted in empathy. This gay man—one of millions who found comfort in knowing Dolly Parton was firmly in our corner—can never repay what she gave us.
But Party Favorz can do what we’ve always done when honoring the women who provided the soundtrack to our lives: turn up the volume, fill the dancefloor and celebrate the music.
For Dolly.
