One standout during this period was the progressive to trance remixes by Gabriel & Dresden. These were integral to the darker side of club music that defined this era. Their remix of Jewel’s “Intuition” still ranks as one of my top picks. Jewel, originally an alt-folk singer, transitioned into pop music, proving that intelligent lyrics could blend with pop’s perceived superficiality. Despite the enthusiastic reception of her overly-sexualized music video by her music label, she fully supported the transformation of her songs into dance tracks.
Other mainstream hits included Christina Milian’s “Dip It Low”, Janet Jackson’s “All Nite (Don’t Stop)”, and Justin Timberlake’s “Rock Your Body”. These tracks not only dominated the pop charts but also set the dance floor ablaze, particularly the Sander Kleinberg’s progressive house mixes.
On the lesser-known side, Nina Sky’s “Move Your Body” and Mylo’s “Drop the Pressure” have now achieved classic status. These tracks received a remix treatment in 2022, reviving their popularity in clubs worldwide.
This era also witnessed ONO, John Lennon’s widow, dipping her toes into the dance music scene. ONO’s abstract poetry, remixed into dance music, was a gamble that paid off, with “Walking on Thin Ice” – here interpreted by Pet Shop Boys with the Danny Tengalia remix hitting hard on the gay circuit while topping the club charts.
Finally, let’s not forget the Heaven & Earth remix of “Clocks” by Coldplay. Despite its unofficial status and low chart rankings, it had a profound impact on club music, an influence that Coldplay would later acknowledge and embrace.
