Building the Ultimate Pride Dance Classics Mix
To be honest, I had a specific vision for this collection of gay anthems, but it wasn’t until I started putting everything together that I realized the challenges ahead.
While I wanted to stick with the original versions whenever possible, I quickly discovered that more recent remixes of certain tracks helped maintain a tighter pace and better overall flow. You’ll hear even more of that in Volume 3, dropping later this week. Don’t worry—these updated remixes remain faithful to the spirit of the originals while giving these Pride dance classics some extra punch.
Mixing Different Styles Without Losing the Dancefloor
Given the wide range of styles represented in this compilation, key mixing works beautifully for some tracks. At other points, however, it becomes necessary to change direction before staying with one sound for too long.
That’s where matching the percussive elements of different songs comes into play. Even when two tracks come from different styles or eras, the right rhythmic elements can create a natural transition between them. There’s no software shortcut for that. It’s a technique I learned years ago whenever I needed to shift gears or inject fresh energy into a mix.
Editing the Remixes for Better Flow
I also found myself re-editing a couple of overly ambitious remixes with extended drops that seemed to lead nowhere. It only happened twice in this set, but you’ll hear more of those edits in the upcoming volumes.
One track I deliberately left untouched was Toni Braxton’s “Un-Break My Heart”. The legendary mix was an early breakthrough for Hex Hector, working alongside Soul Solution, and helped establish the sound that would eventually make him one of the biggest remixers of the era.
You can also hear that his trademark approach to dramatic drops hadn’t been fully developed yet. The track would be easy enough to tighten up, but this time I decided to let the entire remix play out in all its glory. Besides, it’s hardly excessive compared with some of the marathon club mixes that followed later.
Pride, Freedom and the Fight for Our Rights
If you’ve been following the Roe v. Wade issue currently making waves in the United States, you already know how passionate I can get about political matters. Ever since the leaked Supreme Court draft opinion surfaced ahead of the Court’s expected decision in late June, I’ve been deeply concerned—and everyone should be paying attention.
The potential repercussions reach far beyond abortion rights and affect much more than women alone. I’ll have more to say about that, most likely after we’ve finished rolling out these Pride mixes. I want to lay out the broader consequences clearly and explain why this moment deserves to be taken seriously.
Celebrate Who You Are
For now, though, my main goal is simple: embrace your freedom, be proud of who you are, and find some happiness on the dancefloor.
