Classic Circuit Anthems: New York City Boy
When I revisited these classic circuit anthems, one thing jumped out: the DJs loved to go big. The vocals soared, the breakdowns stretched out, and a remix could run for 14 minutes without anyone batting an eye. On the dance floor, that scale was part of the thrill. Listening back years later, I found a few places where a careful edit could keep the energy moving.
That’s what I’ve done with New York City Boy. I trimmed sections that felt repetitive while keeping the builds, breaks, and moments we remember. These tracks still have plenty of room to breathe.
Pet Shop Boys Bring the Drama
Thunderpuss’ remix of the Pet Shop Boys’ “New York City Boy” captures the joy of a packed circuit party. I can still picture our sweaty gay brothers throwing their hands up during the chorus while we shouted “VODKA, VODKA” at the top of our lungs. If you were there, you know exactly what I mean.
DJ Skribble and Anthony Acid’s remix of “I’m Not in Love” is another example of the era’s taste for an extended ride. Both tracks had passages I could tighten without losing what made them such memorable dance floor anthems.
More Classic Circuit Anthems
New York City Boy continues the four-set Classic Circuit Anthems collection. Each volume brings back the vocals, drama, and communal release that made these nights special. The series closes with Strict Machine, where I’ve made a few more light edits to keep the music flowing.
This set originally arrived during a busy stretch for Party Favorz, alongside our Gay Pride 2014 lineup, the 2014 Catch-Up collection, and our summer Beach House mixes. Years later, these circuit anthems still take me right back to the dance floor.
Until the next time…ENJOY!
