Modern Queer Anthems Meet Pride Classics
We’ve packed this compilation with all the iconic gay anthems you’d expect from a series of this size. But that’s not all. We’ve also pulled in some overlooked gems from the past 12 years that deserve another moment in the spotlight.
I’ve gone through this release with particular attention to the sequencing and transitions, making sure the mix flows smoothly while moving between different eras, styles, and moods.
When Volume 3 drops next week, you’ll see just how far we’ve taken the concept. Together, these sets create a musical time capsule that celebrates both our past and present while touching on many different aspects of gay life.
Teenage Angst Belongs in the Gay Anthem Canon
There’s also another category of gay anthem I didn’t address in the previous post: teenage angst.
Growing up gay has become easier and more accepting in many places, but that experience is far from universal. Many of us remember those high school years when coming out wasn’t an option because we feared being rejected, bullied, or completely ostracized. Maybe you even had an impossible crush on your straight best friend.
This set includes several songs that speak to teenage longing, anger, isolation, and frustration.
After binge-watching the latest season of Stranger Things on Netflix and hearing Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” repeatedly, I started thinking about the music that gave me comfort during those years. At the time, Kate Bush felt like she belonged to me and was somehow speaking directly to my soul.
Later, Sinéad O’Connor’s The Lion and the Cobra occupied that same space in my life. Before either of them, there was the Pretenders’ debut album.
From Alternative Rock to Emo and the Search for Belonging
By the new millennium, Emo music had become the soundtrack for another generation of angst-ridden teenagers.
Anyone can relate to some degree of isolation, insecurity, or depression during adolescence. But growing up gay often adds another layer—the fear of being discovered, the desire to fit in, and the constant search for acceptance from your peers.
So, I want to dedicate part of this set to those kids still going through it. It really does get better. Life may never become perfect, but it can become much, much better than whatever you’re experiencing right now.
More Gay Anthems Are Coming
I know Gay Pride events are already in full swing, so I’ll be dropping the third and final volume of these modern queer anthems around Thursday to keep the celebration going.
Unfortunately, there won’t be an official Gay Pride release this year for the circuit boys, but I’ve still got you covered. The Pride-themed tracks will be included in Part 1 of the 2022 Summer Edition.
And to all our straight allies waiting patiently for new music, I haven’t forgotten my promise. Fresh tunes are on the way.
