Blow Your Own Horn 2014 | The Ultimate New Year’s Dance Party Mix

I’ve been playing around with some new software called Mash-up that I really like, but am still on a learning curve.

Overall, I am really pleased how this set came out, even if I had to finish the second half using my old standby.

Basically, I took the best songs of 2013 and ran them through a juicer where I extracted the best parts and then spiced it up a bit with some 2012 favs creating the ultimate party concoction this side of the Atlantic.

As I get better with the software, you can expect some sets to be chopped and blocked later this year. I’m also leaning towards dumping the Time Capsule Series at the end of the year and just blasting a party set like this in its place.

After all, the majority of the songs have already appeared in one form or another in my sets throughout the year, not to mention my Pride set, which typically recaps the best of the first six months anyway.

Sorry, no cue file for this set as this is meant to be listened to from beginning to end.  I hope everyone has a fabulous New Year’s celebration planned. Please take your safety into consideration as well as others.

As I move into new territory in 2014, I hope you all stay for the ride.  It could get a little bumpy with my new home here at house-mixes.com but I am confident I have made the right choice going forward.

Happy New Year Everybody! –K

Top Dance Songs of 2013 Volume 4

Coverart for Top Dance Songs 2014 Volume 4 with time capsule lodged between to cliffs that reach the clouds

Presenting volume 4 of the “Top Dance Songs of 2013” series.

Having meticulously crafted all four parts over the previous months, it is evident that Electronic Dance Music (EDM), as most know it, might be nearing a plateau.

That is not to suggest that its popularity will decline in 2014; on the contrary, it will continue to soar. However, the oversaturation and commercialized sounds pushed out by major labels, producing anthem after anthem, has blurred the lines between distinct artists and producers. This “copycat” strategy seems to be the prevailing trend, echoing successes like the Swedish House Mafia in the “Top Dance Songs of 2013”.

Young talent, Zedd, provides an excellent case in point. The enormous success of “Clarity” last year and “Spectrum” from the “Top Dance Songs of 2013”, both from his debut with Interscope, led to the release of the expanded version of his album. The new single, “Stay the Night”, unfortunately followed the same blueprint, hinting at a creative impasse by his label. 2014 could offer him a fresh chance to deliver something unique that resonates both on the dance floor and radio.

Avicii understands the need for innovation. His single “Wake Me Up”, initially criticised for its country or folksy undertones, turned out to be a colossal EDM track of the year. If a major label were involved, we might never have heard this gem.

This conversation brings us to the 2013 disco revival led by the legendary Daft Punk. It was a smart move by Sony to put substantial promotion behind their latest project. “Get Lucky” landed a spot in the “Top Dance Songs of 2013”, and rightfully so. With a groovy bassline reminiscent of Bernard Edwards and Nile Rogers’ smooth guitar work, the track would comfortably fit into a 1979 playlist. Though a full-fledged disco comeback might not be on the horizon, it wouldn’t be surprising to see its offshoot, NuDisco, breaking into mainstream music in 2014.

The surge in EDM’s popularity, evident from the likes of Tiesto’s residency in Las Vegas, mirrors the significant financial investments the genre has attracted. The fuse lit in the “Top Dance Songs of 2013” will continue to burn brightly into 2014, perhaps reaching a crescendo in 2015.

Party Favorz has been tracking these shifts from Disco to Hi-NRG to House Music and Trance. Every dance music trend evolves from its predecessor, typically with a unique twist, and the future should be no different. While we’re not predicting specific sound trends, our dedication to dance music remains constant. With the “Top Dance Songs of 2013” series coming to an end, Party Favorz is fully prepared to guide everyone towards “the next big thing” as it unfolds.

Until the next time…ENJOY!
