House Edition 2008 Volume 4 (Take 2)

Here it is, the second installment of the House Edition v4, served up on a sizzling hot platter of disco with a side of seventies soul.  The ATL has already been experiencing some fall-like weather with cooler evenings and temps ranging in the low to mid-eighties during the day.  Suits me fine as I always enjoy the transition from summer to autumn.  I’ll be starting the much delayed Classix Edition: 90’s part deuce shortly.  Until then, I hope everyone has a great week and until the next time…ENJOY!

Album : House Edition v4
Genre : Disco, Funky, House, Soulful
Year : 2008
Total Time : 1:19:54:00

Track : 1
Title : Third Time (Shave Main Mix)
Artist : Levi 5Star feat. Michelle Martinez

Funky house with a pulsating beat and Michelle demanding “did you think that I was easy?”  Think of it as one of those “I Am Woman” empowerment songs with an urgency that demands R-E-S-P-E-C-T!  Essential

Track : 2
Title : Hideaway 2008 (7th Heaven Club Mix)
Artist : De’Lacy

I’m going to be honest, I didn’t know anything about this tune from 1995.  I did hear some 2008 mixes that came out earlier this year, but I wasn’t all that impressed, until now.  Always lovin’ the 7th Heaven vibe, this Hed Kandi promo has been rocking my world and guaranteed it will rock yours too.  Essential.

Track : 3
Title : Can You Feel That Sound (Josh Harris’ Club Mix)
Artist : Georgie Porgie

IT’S GEORGIE TIME!  …and he’s serving up some serious optimistic funk like no other.  Sometimes I think that no matter how bad things get, Georgie always remains upbeat.  He’s probably someone I should be hanging around with right now.  Since that ain’t gonna happen, I’ll settle for this heavenly slice of positive attitude.  Essential.

Track : 4
Title : Let It Go (Groove Assassins Remix)
Artist : Afterlife feat. Cathy Battistessa

Bringing the vibe down, we move into this slow-burning number with a very addictive bass line and soothing vocals by Cathy Battistessa.  Essential.

Track : 5
Title : Come Into My Life (Haldo’s Original Mix)
Artist : Haldo feat. Erika Scherlin

When I saw this, I was hoping it might be a remake of the Joyce Sims classic from back in the day.  Sadly, it is not.  However, that certainly doesn’t take anything from this song.   Though not bad, it just feels like something is missing to really lure the listener in.  That being said, there are several fantastic dub/vocal mixes that accompany the package that many of you might favor.  Also, check out Haldo’s Floor Mix which kicks it up a notch.

Track : 6
Title : How Long (Davidson Ospina Vocal Remix)
Artist : Linda Clifford

I’ve been all over this song since I used the Paul Goodyear version in my Pride Edition v3.  Ospina keeps the high tempo of Paul’s mix but dresses it down in strict 90’s house fashion.  Now that we have the official remixes currently available on disc at Perfect Beat, I’m still hoping Linda’s pal Ralphi hops on board with one of his sizzling peak hour mixes.  Outstanding.

Track : 7
Title : Release Your Mind 2008 (Richard Earnshaw Remix)
Artist : Syke ‘n’ Sugarstarr

What if Barry White hooked up with Richard Earnshaw and Syke ‘n’ Sugarstarr then created a funky house masterpiece?  Folks, this IS what it would sound like.  Essential.

Track : 8
Title : Keep On Push (Outwave Project Remix)
Artist : Alex Barattini

Another song with a positive attitude set to swirling strings and a big disco beat.  I’m really into these mixes that use the old school orchestration.  Can you imagine what it must have cost for some of those seventies classics to be put together with a full orchestra?  Essential.

Track : 9
Title : Real Love (Original)
Artist : Highland Skies feat. Amanda Pryce

ABSOLUTELY LOVIN’ THIS SONG!  Definitely has the late eighties, early nineties vibe going on.   I need to start looking out for more songs by Amanda because this is way beyond amazing.  Quick, someone snatches her up and record a full album…we need more songs like this.  Essential.

Track : 10
Title : Sometimes (Turn Back The Years Dub)
Artist : Raul Rincon & Terri B

Clocking in at 9:50, these guys cheated themselves out of a 5-star review because it took way to long to build up to the good part.  Luckily, I was able to edit some stuff out and get to the point.  Several of you may recognize the groove from last years massive “Time” by Speakerbox.  Outstanding.

Track : 11
Title : Can’t Stop (Original)
Artist : Phats & Small vs. Flava

Did you say Phat’s & Small?  Hell yeah!  Remember their feel-good rework of Earth, Wind & Fire’s “September ’99” that blew up about this time of year?  With one half of Freemasons, I’m glad to see these guys stretch out into some old school.  Though not the same song, I’m wondering if this is what Michael Jackson’s “I Can’t Stop Loving You” might sound like if it were set to a house beat.  For those not familiar with Flava, they are a dance troupe that won the 2008 “Britain’s Got Talent’ contest.  Check out the trailer teaser below.  Essential.

Track : 12
Title : Hope For Better Days (Original Mix)
Artist : Bibi feat. Malou Beauvoir

More positive house imagery that focuses on war and a ‘We Are the World’ message.  Set over a deep Isaac Hayes type groove, Malou’s got somethin’ to say and you better stand up and pay heed.  “This is an expression of our hope and our joy”.  Outstanding.

Track : 13
Title : All Night Long (Falko Niestolik & J.K. David Mix)
Artist : Luke Lawson feat. Big John Whitfield

Finally, a little Philly Soul meets 21st-century house!  I gotta say John Whitfield does an amazing O’Jays turn on this song.  Groove is in the heart…indeed.  Outstanding.

House Edition 2008 Volume 4 (Take 1)

House Edition 2008 v4I want to welcome everyone to the final House Edition of the summer.  Don’t expect another Beach House mix ’cause that ain’t what’s being served up.  Instead, I purposely took this mix in a more uplifting direction full of fun disco house music.  Granted, there’s definitely a lot of soul to boot, but it is the ‘fun’ aspect I was focusing on.  Besides, summer will end soon and I wanted to leave on a feel-good note.  I hope all the disruptions this weekend didn’t kill my vibe, but I think I really delivered on this one; not just on song choice but mixing as well.  I’ll be back tomorrow or the day after with Take 2 of this mix.  Until then…ENJOY!

Album : House Edition v4
Genre : Disco, Funky, House, Soulful
Year : 2008
Total Time : 1:19:55:00
Track : 1
Title : It’s Yours (Joey Negro Remix)
Artist : Jon Cutler feat. E-Man

With a ton of support from a variety of DJs, this is destined to be a late summer smash.  Of course, I’m always partial to Joey and he certainly did not fail to deliver.  Essential

Track : 2
Title : Love Me (Sergio D’Angelo Remix)
Artist : Steve Paradise feat. Kiara S

The vocals on this song alone are worth the price of admission alone.  Amazing song, even better vocals and a stellar remix by Sergio; this is the full meal deal.  What a package!  Essential.

Track : 3
Title : I Love America (DJ Meme Main Club Mix)
Artist : Hanna Hais

I for one would have never thought about doing a remix of the Patrick Juvet disco club hit from 1979.  I had to go back and dig out my Casablanca Records box set to refresh my memory.  After listening to both, I gotta say DJ Meme was definitely the guy for the job.  I’ve really been digging his work lately and this mix does not fail to disappoint.  Essential.

Track : 4
Title : Gotta Have House (Do You Remember) (Knee Deep Anthem Mix)
Artist : Knee Deep & DJ Spen feat. Biblical Jones

Yet another song about ‘house music’.  Nevertheless, Knee Deep live up to their name and really punch the groove out in their mix, making this an obvious choice for a night out in Ibiza.

Track : 5
Title : Show Me How Good (Arduini-Pagany Philly Vocal Mix)
Artist : Arduini & Pagany feat. Vale Ducros

Ahh, picture yourself under the disco lights getting all caught up in the swirling strings.  This feel-good number is instantly catchy and definitely memorable.  Essential.

Track : 6
Title : Down (Vocal Club Mix)
Artist : Freak ‘n’ Funky

Boogie Oogie Oogie…need I say more?  Essential.

Track : 7
Title : Where Love Lives 2008 (Soulshaker Remix)
Artist : Alison Limerick

Earlier this summer, I previewed an amazing electro version and now we have the Soulshaker remix.  Well, we all know that Soulshaker has definitely been on a roll lately and this song just continues that pattern with their take on this early 90’s classic.  Essential.

Track : 8
Title : Underlying Feeling (Soulshaker Remix)
Artist : Sylvia Tosun

After failing to really make a dent with her amazing “Head Over Heels” track back in early December, Sylvia is back with her follow-up.  Folks, this is an ultra-catchy tune with a couple outstanding remixes to suit everyone.  Now if this doesn’t hit, then something is just ain’t right in clubland.  Essential.

Track : 9
Title : Falling (Earnshaw’s Vocal Re-Touch)
Artist : Soulmakers

Not an instantly gotcha song like its predecessors in this mix, but once you get into it, you’ll be feeling the groove too.  Outstanding.

Track : 10
Title : Poor People (Original)
Artist : Quentin Harris feat. Monique Bingham

This is certainly Quentin’s year.  He’s already got one the best songs of the year with ‘My Joy” featuring Margaret Grace and now another floor burner.  I don’t know where he keeps digging up these amazing vocalist, but he definitely has a knack.  Since this has not been released off of his amazing album ‘No Politics’, I’m hoping for a full remix package once more DJs hop on board for what is certain to be another house classic.  Essential.

Track : 11
Title : For The Light (Eric Kupper Remix)
Artist : Cargo

Good but not great.  Vocals are a little thin and the production seems to have been duplicated from his work with Samantha James.  In fact, this may very well be a leftover track from those sessions.  Nevertheless, I don’t rag on Eric who is like a god to me.  That being said, this is still a fine mix.  I just wish Samantha had sung on it.  Outstanding.

Track : 12
Title : Shining Star (The Mac Project Instrumental)
Artist : Sybil

I know you must be asking yourself ‘so why didn’t you use the vocal mix…after all, this marks the return of Sybil?’  Actually, the vocal mix is very good and I’m definitely looking forward to hearing more from her.  The only problem I had was that the actual mix got washed out in favor of bringing the vocals to the forefront.  I think an equal balance would have suited the song better since Mac’s production is as equally important.  Nevertheless, this is the first release off of Ultra Nate’s new label ‘Deep Sugar Music’; and if they both keep putting stuff like this out, odds are Sybil will be back on top and Ultra will be a contender in the dance label business. Outstanding.

Track : 13
Title : We Ride (Moto Blanco Club Vox)
Artist : Mary J. Blige

All of a sudden this appeared in April out of nowhere.  I’m thinking this may have been completed for the release of her semi-best of comp that came out a couple of years ago and was never picked up by Mary’s label.  Well, it’s out now and my god what were they thinking?  Had they released it at the time, ‘We Ride’ might very well have been a bigger hit.  Essential.
