Blow Your Own Horn 2021 | The Ultimate New Year’s Dance Party

Blow Your Own Horn 2021

About this time in 2019, I was hospitalized with a burst appendix where I waited 48 hours to have an operation while they kept me hopped up on painkillers so they could run up the bill with unnecessary tests and then proceed to re-diagnose my pre-existing condition based on a MRI that can only be diagnosed through a lumbar puncture. That doctor went on to become the Republican nominee for the House and lost his ass in a major landslide.

In fact, our entire district in GA flipped from red to blue all the way down to dog catcher. While I ripped him a new one (after the operation because I’m not stupid) and embarrassed the living shit out of him in front of his colleagues, I took some solace in the grifter’s epic loss.

Fuck 2020

Little did I know at the time that the new year was only going to get worse save that single glimpse of hope during the election.

There’s no doubt that 2020 will go down as one of the most memorable if not worst years on record. Surprisingly, dance music has been a shiny beacon atop the hill providing stability if not sanity.

2020 is the year of the Disco comeback, which provided a bit of escapism to the new daily routines that were mapped out by mother nature. Dua Lipa’s “Don’t Start Now” kicked it off to great applause that was quickly followed by Doja Cat (“Say So”) and Lady Gaga (“Rain On Me”). Surprisingly, these songs and/or albums were already in the can before the pandemic hit and acted as a breath of fresh air for our current stale musical landscape. Talk about foresight.

It was also the year that dance music became more reflective as songs like “ily (i love you baby)” by Surfa Mesa, “Secrets” by Regard & Raye, “Breaking Me” by Topic & A75 and “Looking For Me” by Paul Woolford, Diplo & Kareen Lomax stepped up to massive success where MEDUZA, Becky Hill and Goodboys left off at the end of 2019 with “Lose Control.”

For such a shitty year, dance music had a lot to offer in these sobering times.

The Blow Your Own Horn series generally acts as the last kiss-off to the current year while welcoming the incoming one. Most of the year’s biggest hits included in this set have been mashed-up with the octave level turned-up high. There’s a few new notable tracks and bucket load of classics that have been juiced-up and reimagined with 10 servings of Monster drinks. The energy level is purposely high which should give rise to saying one final FUCK YOU to the year we’d sooner forget.

I want to thank each and everyone of you who have continued to support our mission to bring you the finest in dance music — you mean the world to me. I wish you all a very healthy, happy and prosperous new year. Until next year…PARTY LIKE IT’S 2021 and ENJOY!

Top Dance Songs of 2020 Volume 3

Top Dance Songs 2020

We have reached the end of the Top Dance Songs of 2020 with volume 3 and it is glorious! This final volume has a more laidback feel overall and that’s because many of the tracks included in these sets are pop hits that were never intended for the dance floor. Nevertheless, the songs are culturally important and resonate with so many people that it’s inevitable the label either commissions official remixes or aspiring DJ/producers remix the tracks for their own sets.

You’d think that with everything on lockdown, there wouldn’t be that much great dance club music but far from it. That’s not to say that there was as much during the second half of the year but we still had more than enough to fill our typical three-volume year-end series.

If anything positive came out of 2020 — it would be musical styles in popular and dance music have started to give way to more diversity in their offerings. I realize that many of the songs in this series rely heavily on a formulaic Future House sound and the likes of Joel Corry, J Bruus, Colin Jay, Cosmic Dawn, Division 4 & Matt Consola, Ray Isaac, and Charlie Lane have perfected that sound but to their credit — they’re serving up dance floor earworms for tracks that otherwise would never get remixed.

Probably one of the most exciting remixes this year was for WAP by DJ Ranny. Yes, there were several unofficial remixes out there but none added to the excitement and party nature of the song. When Ranny sent his take over — I was bowled over as I immediately knew he hit a home run! It’s a shame it couldn’t have been enjoyed more on dance floors across the globe because it was a surefire winner.

I think Dua Lipa tapped into something with the direction of music by digging into the 70s Disco, 80s Dance, and 90s House Music to create a feel-good escape on her sophomore effort “Future Nostalgia.” Doja Cat equally did a great job of keeping our heads nodding to a slinky disco beat. Don’t be surprised if Madonna finally — after all these years of begging her — goes back to her roots and delivers a carefree album that taps into the energy of her debut album. I’ll lay down good money on it.

In the interim, I hope everyone is enjoying this mega time capsule of the year 2020 with all the good, bad and ugly this year will be known for decades to come. We have one more set to close the year out and I’ll do my best to make it one roof-raising floor scorcher for all my party people. Until then…ENJOY!
