Perhaps it’s presumptuous to post this before the polls close, but current polling shows Barack Obama with a healthy lead over John McCain. If those numbers hold, this country will elect a Black man to the presidency for the first time in its history.
Nearly 29 million Americans have already voted early, and today’s turnout promises to make this one of the most memorable elections of my lifetime. Like Michelle Obama, I can honestly say I have never felt prouder of my country.
We come to that feeling from different perspectives, but as a disabled gay American, I understand intolerance, hatred, and bigotry. I am also the product of Catholic conservative parents and still carry many of the values they instilled in me. I believe in the American Dream—the idea that people can rise above difficult circumstances and build better lives for themselves and those they love. Barack Obama’s journey reinforces that belief.
It is one reason I continue pushing through my own struggles to find work and build a comfortable life with my partner. Barack didn’t give up, and neither will I. This is truly a moment to celebrate.
So here is the first of four mixes marking Obama’s historic rise. Folks, it’s time to P-A-R-T-Y!
