We have reached the end of the Hi-NRG Gay Anthems series, and all I have to say is WOW! Party Favorz has quite possibly one of the most extensive collections of dance music mixes of any podcast out there, spanning the 70s through today. Even after all these years, I’m still surprised by how well certain sets perform. This series has exceeded even my wildest expectations.
More Than 800 Party Favorz Dance Music Mixes
I’ve been revisiting classics from different genres and eras for quite some time, yet each new rollout seems to become a discovery for many of you. If you’re new to Party Favorz, I can’t recommend enough that you spend some time looking around instead of simply working backward through the posts chronologically.
The site is fairly easy to navigate through its categories and subcategories, with more than 800 podcasts still available directly on Party Favorz that aren’t necessarily accessible through streaming services. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by what’s under the hood once you start digging around.
Hi-NRG Gay Anthems From the 80s and 90s
That being said, Volume 4 continues with re-energized mixes of 80s and 90s gay anthem Hi-NRG Classics.
You’ll notice I went with the Hannah Jones version of “I Am What I Am” because the Gloria Gaynor version felt a little dated alongside the rest of the set. Jennifer Holliday’s “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going” features newly sung vocals for the Almighty mix, and it still holds up remarkably well. There are three different Almighty versions, but I chose the one that could easily be dropped into the middle of this mix without disrupting the flow.
Katherine Ellis Takes On a Gwen Guthrie Classic
The fabulous Katherine Ellis, who has been MIA for a while but is making a comeback relatively soon — yes, I’ve already got the promos — delivers a searing rendition of the Gwen Guthrie 80s classic “Ain’t Nothin’ Goin’ On but the Rent”, turning it into an explosive dancefloor stomper with 7th Heaven‘s signature sound all over it.
Lime Gets an Early Almighty Makeover
You’ll also notice that the 1981 Lime Hi-NRG classic included here is a rare reworked version and one of the earliest Almighty mixes they ever laid down. It carries that signature early-90s house sound while updating the original for a new era.
Frankly, I think it still holds together quite nicely. I also want to thank Marshall for helping me track it down because the quality of the version I originally had was subpar.
Sarah Washington and a Pre-Whitney Dancefloor Favorite
I also went with Sarah Washington’s searing rendition of “I Will Always Love You,” which was released well before Clive Davis commissioned Hex Hector to rework Whitney’s massive hit several years after its original release.
Sarah later scored a massive dance hit with the Hex Hector-produced “Heaven” by the end of the decade. That track remains a staple in DJ circles to this day.
Closing With Inner Life and Jocelyn Brown
Finally, I close out the set with the early-80s reworking of the Ashford & Simpson-penned “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.” The song was originally recorded by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell before becoming a massive hit for Diana Ross in the early 70s following the launch of her solo career.
In this case, Inner Life does the honors, featuring the uncredited vocals of Jocelyn Brown, who also happens to be one of our Diva Hall of Fame inductees.
